Turn that post-Christmas frown upside down and look towards 2017. The festive period might be over but January is still buzzing with plenty of events to look forward to in London.

New Year’s Day Parade – 1st January

If you’re not feeling too delicate on the 1st Jan, then head down to central London to see the spectacular New Year’s Day parade. With over 8500 performers, the parade boasts marching bands, cheerleaders, dancers, West End stars and loads of Pearly Kings & Queens! The parade starts at 12 PM from Piccadilly and makes its way down to Parliament Street. You can view the route on the website, but make sure you arrive early to get a good view on the day!

Now in its 14th year, The London Short Film Festival has been showcasing cutting edge independent films from the UK and beyond. Featuring an incredible line-up from creative filmmakers, both young and old, the festival is essential to keeping the independent cinema movement live and kicking. This year’s Special Events programmes will take a look at key subcultures and youth movements through music, from Riot Grrrl to Grime to Black Rock. The festival is spread around numerous venues in London, including the nearby Moth Club, Hackney Picturehouse and Hackney Attic.

Unleash your inner dancer and twirl, twist and twerk the night away at London’s newest club night dedicated to the art of dancing like nobody’s watching! A night full of nostalgia will get those feet tappin’ with huge dancefloor tunes from Diana Ross, Justin Bieber, Wham, Sister Sledge, Prince, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and oh so much more! Tickets are available in advance for just £3 or £4 on the door before midnight.

Celebrate Scotland’s raunchiest poet with an all out spectacular at St John-at-Hackney Church. Complete with literary recitals, fire twirling fire, live pipers, whisky and one bloody massive haggis, this is the night to indulge in some Scottish history in an East London setting. It’s an indulgent night from £39 a ticket, but you won’t find a party like it this end of London!

Roosters, assemble! It’s your year to celebrate! Join the crowds to witness the amazing Chinese New Year celebrations featuring spectacular acrobats, traditional dance, martial arts displays, workshops, crafts and of course the gorgeously handcrafted traditional lions and dragons. The party starts at 10 AM kicking off at Trafalgar Square. There will be plenty of delicious food on offer too as the local restaurants in the areas get involved with their takes on Chinese food menus!
