Interview With the Fabulous Zambar

23 Feb , 2018 Staff Member Of The Month,The Dictionary Hostel,Things To Do In London

Zambar is the most fabulous member of our staff. He is originally from South Africa and works on the Dictionary Hostel cleaning crew (so we have him to thank for most of the crazy things we find!). He’s known around here as the ‘Sexy Breakfast Host’ and uses his background as an entertainer to serenade our guests over toast and tea! We LOVE Zambar, so were delighted when he agreed to be interviewed!

How did you hear about the hostel?

I stayed at the hostel as a guest five years ago.

What made you decide to become a live-in cleaning crew volunteer at the hostel?

I was originally working down the road and I was looking for something close to my job where there was lots of opportunities to socialise.

Tell us a bit about your background.

I am originally from South Africa. I am a singer who was part of a band that helped to save the famous 100 Club on Oxford Street! I am a socialite, partier who loves nightlife, and gay joker!

You are now considered the ‘Sexy Breakfast Host?’

Laughs I really enjoy working the breakfast shift at the hostel. The hostel offers a continental breakfast to all of our guests from Monday through Saturday from 8:00am until 10:00am and until 11:00am on Sundays.

When I started, we only offered boiled eggs and now I offer fried or scrambled eggs in addition. I like being able to offer this extra service to our guests. I love keeping people entertained in the mornings even if I am hung over. I like to joke with our guests so they can start their day with a smile.

Funniest thing that has ever happened to you at the hostel?

There is always an opportunity for a funny experience with a guest. I usually play off the guest’s character as they are all funny in their own ways.

You are known for your morning Djing skills!

Music is an important component of the morning breakfast. I start the mornings soft and gently and then move on to more up-tempo music as the breakfast progresses. I usually play acoustic/jazzy vibes. On the weekends, I usually throw on some more up-tempo, funky beats, or house music. I play Jack Johnson a lot!

What has your Dictionary hostel experience been like so far on the live-in cleaning crew?

The hostel crew is like a family. You become a unit with your fellow colleagues. There is always someone to talk to. This is a very social atmosphere where is it easy to make good friends. You get to meet people from all different walks of life.

This experience is great for people who want to learn English… The location of the hostel is convenient to a lot of great places as well.
